Why Prince Andrew Has Surrendered His Official Honors – and the Implications for the Monarchy
Through a statement issued via the royal household, the king's brother has confirmed he is giving up his official honors, such as the Duke of York. Here are the details of what has been revealed – and what remains unchanged.
What Did Andrew Said?
Having already stepped down as a working royal in 2019, the prince has currently chosen to “take additional measures” and consent not to use the “honor or the awards which have been granted to” him.
However, he employed the announcement to emphatically denying – as he has always done – the allegations of misconduct made against him; albeit having paid out millions to settle the civil sexual assault case filed by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he admitted no liability and firmly denied any claims of improper conduct.
There has existed ongoing scrutiny on the monarchy regarding the allegations involving the prince – particularly after his ill-fated television appearance with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He presently states he is acting to protect the royal family from additional harm resulting from public speculation.
Has the King Removed Him of His Titles?
No. And although this could be dismissed as a mere formality, it is significant in multiple ways: initially, it allows Andrew to publicly claim to have behaved with integrity in defence of the monarchy. As stated in his announcement: “I have decided, consistent with my past, to prioritize my obligations to my family and the nation first.”

He remains royalty and eighth in succession to the throne. In theory, he remains still a counsellor of state – and can stand in for the sovereign if he is overseas or ill. Although the palace has indicated that, realistically, he will not be called upon to fulfil this role.
Nevertheless, it is telling that Andrew’s statement indicated this choice was made “in discussion with the monarch”. It appears little doubt that, behind the scenes, the royal household pushed for the move in the aim of distancing the institution from Andrew.
Why Was He Not Been Officially Stripped of All of His Titles?
To revoke a ducal title would require legislative action, and would constitute such a historic move in full view of the public – it has not occurred to a high-ranking royal in over a century – that it would likely result in further reputational damage for the monarchy.
Andrew is also a royal by birth. When he was born in 1960, he was automatically as the son of a monarch. This would only be changed if a letters patent was issued by the reigning monarch.

The republican campaign group Republic has also said the action is “insufficient and delayed”, adding: “Andrew remains accused of sexual misconduct and abuse of office.
