Unmasking Venezuela Victory Videos and AI Images of Maduro.

Computer-created images claiming to show Venezuela's president in custody following his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered tens of millions of views on social media.

The Way AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Within Hours

The first fabricated synthetic picture seemingly displaying him taken off a aircraft emerged a brief time later. The picture was not shared any official US channels; rather, it was published on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

We’ve checked the SynthID tool, determining the picture was created or altered with generative AI.

More AI-generated pictures were disseminated in the following period, purporting to present additional perspectives of Maduro in custody. Noticeable watermarks on the graphics reveal they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

The detection tool confirms all of these pictures were similarly produced using Google AI.

Real Photo Posted but Fakes Continued

Donald Trump shared the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. But even after the authentic image was published, AI-generated images continued to spread but were altered to show the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.

Digital forensics show these altered fabrications were first posted on TikTok by a digital art account. Similarly, SynthID found the new graphics were created or altered Google AI.

Main Takeaways:

  • Synthetic media spread rapidly following the announcement of Maduro's capture.
  • The first fake image was shared within hours on social media.
  • Detection software like AI-watermark detectors helped to identify the pictures as synthetic.
  • Fabrications persisted to circulate and evolve even after the publication of real images.
  • The source of many fakes was traced to specific online profiles focused on AI art.
