The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
