Monte Cook along with Monte Cook Are Teaching Sessions at Dungeon Master Academy
Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting deeply engaging experiences where expert DMs manage D&D games in ancient fortresses in Britain and at a U.S. castle resort. The comprehensive packages are highly favored among career game masters who infrequently find the opportunity to participate as players themselves, and they often ask for tips from the pros on topics ranging from spontaneous storytelling and puzzle design to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.
In response, the planners began developing a organized method to tackle these topics, which led to the creation of DMU. The inaugural event is planned for January 2-3, 2026 at a university in Atlanta.
“It's possible to view countless online tutorials on any topic and gain significant knowledge, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to an in-person experience alongside fellow DMs, where real-time interaction with seasoned educators and your peers often in a similar position and aim to improve their skills,” explained Jason Carl.
Workshop Options and Ticket Packages
Dungeon Masters can select tiers ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to two thousand five hundred dollars, depending on the degree of interaction they desire with the experts. The starting package includes selection from four classes:
- Foundational Skills: Teaches the fundamentals of leading a game.
- Long-Term Game Planning: Focuses around building persistent adventures.
- Setting Creation: Emphasizes the development of worlds.
- Industry Advancement: Aimed at game masters who aim to explore more about the roleplaying business.
Every class includes two days of classwork divided across a weekend.
“The classes are structured so that you walk away with usable skills, increased self-assurance, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl noted. “They’re not just lectures and they’re not just static videos. These workshops that you can participate in, gain knowledge from, and then return to your group the next week and put into practice in your home campaign.”
Professional Teachers
Most classes are led by duo of instructors. Setting design is guided by Monte Cook and a renowned campaign designer, together instructing the craft of setting creation.
Industry advancement presents several experts, such as a puzzle design specialist, an entertainment professional, and a pioneering DM. The extra instructors is designed to offer targeted guidance to students with definite objectives.
“Some of them want to launch their own live gameplay show and present their narratives with the world, others plan to produce and develop fresh ideas,” Carl explained. “Several only seek to ask, What does it take to be a DM at an event like a castle event? Which abilities that I need? Is it for everyone?”
Higher Tiers
A fifteen hundred dollar enhanced option provides access to a welcome reception, a welcome gift pack, and a brief one-on-one appointment with a teacher. This constitutes the first Dungeon Master Academy, though the team has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their premium gatherings.
“One could practically host an full two days just on consultation sessions for professional dungeon masters,” Carl mentioned. “I don’t know if that’s the most effective utilization of all participants' schedule – I believe the coursework and the lab work is highly beneficial – but I believe it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”
The $2.5K premium option includes an hour of one-on-one time and the possibility to lead a session for a small group plus one of the faculty members, who will then offer feedback and guidance.
“The aim is for the teacher to review whatever the DM is focused on: I struggle with improvisation or I encounter obstacles in specific fight encounters. Could I demonstrate a scene for you and get feedback on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl detailed. “Perhaps they want to obtain critique and guidance on a specific world that they’ve been creating.”
Future Plans
Feedback from the inaugural session will help determine subsequent DMU events. Carl mentioned that possible changes could include adding more office hours, making it longer to 72 hours, or testing alternative workshop formats.
“I anticipate that we conduct these very often,” Carl said. “I would love to see several DMU sessions in a calendar year, in multiple places, and in various nations. The response has been really terrific. We're extremely satisfied with what we’re seeing and I believe it would be fantastic to be able to do this in partnership with big conventions.”
