Israeli citizens observe two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire talks advance
Citizens have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the talks said that an late session of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for assistance distribution
- After-conflict governance of the territory
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere appears as home now and until each abducted person are released none of us will feel safe."
"After we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to finish in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the music event, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and locality districts and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the dusk arrives, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"My family are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my smallest child who places his face on me all night."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated two more dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medics reported.
