An Australian is among the 115 persons hurt in a blaze that ripped through a crowded bar during a end-of-year festivities in the mountain resort of Crans-Montana, killing 40 people.
Ministerial Confirmation on National Injured Person
The Australian minister for climate and energy, Chris Bowen, confirmed on Friday morning that an Australian had been injured and was getting both hospital treatment and embassy aid.
“This is undoubtedly a horrific, horrific tragedy and I am confident every Australian extends their sympathies to the Swiss people, the individuals affected,” the minister said during ABC RN radio.
He continued, “I can confirm that one Australian has been injured and is obtaining hospital treatment and the family is receiving support, support from Australian diplomats. Further details cannot be shared for privacy reasons. The name of the individual is not being released at this point.”
Diplomatic Assistance and Ongoing Inquiries
The Australian DFAT verified early Friday it was providing consular assistance to the injured person and their family.
A foreign affairs official said: “DFAT is currently offering consular support to the family members of an Australian citizen that has been injured and is receiving medical care following the fire. Because of our privacy commitments we are not in a position to give more details.”
The official continued, “The department is pursuing immediate inquiries with authorities on the ground to establish if any other Australians were impacted. We are prepared to offer diplomatic support.”
Nature of Consular Assistance
Such support may involve:
- Communicating with or visiting local hospitals.
- Liaising with local authorities.
- Offering information on doctors and clinics.
- Assistance communicating with family members.
Circumstances Surrounding the Tragic Fire
Local police reported the inferno ignited at approximately 1:30 am, local time, in a bar popular with tourists called the Constellation, which is found in the downtown area of the resort in Valais.
Footage from the event depicts orange fire raging from inside the street-level bar and lounge. Screams and loud music can be heard, and a number of individuals were observed fallen outside the building.
Certain victims in the inferno remain unidentified yet due to the seriousness of the burns.
Investigation into the Blaze's Cause
Swiss police said the fire was not deliberately set for the blaze, which is thought to be the result of an accident.
